Understanding Body Fat Percentage: BMI vs BFP

What is the difference between BMI and Body Fat Percentage? Learn which metric matters more for your health.

BMI vs. Body Fat Percentage

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation based on height and weight. While useful for general population studies, it fails to distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass. Body Fat Percentage (BFP) is a more accurate indicator of metabolic health.

How is it calculated?

The US Navy Method is a popular way to estimate BFP using tape measurements of the neck, waist, and hips. It provides a reasonable approximation without expensive equipment like DEXA scans.

Healthy Ranges

  • Essential Fat: Men 2-5%, Women 10-13%
  • Athletes: Men 6-13%, Women 14-20%
  • Fitness: Men 14-17%, Women 21-24%
  • Average: Men 18-24%, Women 25-31%
